The Pitfalls of Last Minute Travel

Unlike the airline industry, Cruises sail with 100% occupancy every day.  Waiting for the last minute is usually not my recommendation.  My experience tells me that cruise lines plan well in advance to fill that ship so the best deals take place in most cases 75 days before they sail.  Cruise lines want to keep pricing fair for those who have gone to the trouble of booking early.  I have also seen many times the best prices are when the cruise is first advertised.  As time goes by you may see prices may rise.  If you want a premium or luxury cruise then definitely plan well in advance (at least six months or more).  I have many clients who are booked well into summer/fall, 2010.

Distressed inventory

Cruise lines can have inventory (usually in the soft months) where there are limited cabins left to sell so they may offer a special category guarantee only (no cabin assigned until just before sailing or on day of sailing) at a reduced rate.  You may or may not get the ideal cabin selection you want but sometimes (not always) they may decide to upgrade you.  My advice on deals such as  these is a "take it or leave it, no complaints" kind of situation.  If you luck out....great... but if not.... understand it's the gamble you took.  Again, my advice will be of great help in these situations.
